2021 Community Conversations

HNC knows and believes in the importance of connecting with other people affected by bleeding disorders to share common experiences, triumphs, and challenges. Over the years, we have implemented a variety of different experiences to allow the community to connect, including intimate educational dinners, Community Connections Groups, parent mentoring, one-day events, and larger retreats and meetings to connect with others facing similar situations. But we know that people are still looking for other ways to connect.

The COVID pandemic has taken many opportunities away from the community, however one opportunity that we have gained, is the chance to connect from home with community members from across the state. The barriers of traveling have been removed thanks to the implementation of Zoom!

Based on community input and the real desire to connect, HNC is starting Virtual Support Groups, called Community Conversations, so that you can connect more closely (while still at home) with people who share similar experiences. These group meetings will be held virtually, using Zoom, so that you can connect wherever you are. We are starting with six groups:

  • Men with bleeding disorders – Blood Brothers Program
  • Families with children diagnosed with bleeding disorders – HOPE Program
  • Women with bleeding disorders – SOAR Program
  • Spouses/partners of someone diagnosed with a bleeding disorder
  • Rare bleeding disorders (factors 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, platelet disorders)
  • Spanish speaking families – Unión Latina program
Each group will meet quarterly. The first few meetings will be to connect, brainstorm ideas, select group leaders, and determine the best time to meet in the future. Subsequent meetings will eventually be led by HNC community members and will remain casual, yet may occasionally have a specific topic or focus.

Please register in advance for individual events. If you have any questions, please contact Gillian Schultz, Director of Programs, by email at gillian.schultz@hemophilia-nc.org or by phone at 919-272-6000. You may also contact the HNC Office at virtual.events@hemophilia-nc.org or by phone at 919-319-0014.
